L’attrice e scrittrice pachistano-americana Fawzia Mirza presenta il suo spettacolo teatrale lesbico e femminista, “Me, My Mom and Sharmila” a Karachi, dove incontra la militante pachistana Sabeen Mahmud. Lo spettacolo di Fawzia è un monologo che racconta le sue esperienze personali, affrontando con franchezza e anche con ironia il tema dell’omosessualità e il rapporto con la madre. Una grande amicizia nasce tra Fawzia e Sabeen, che organizza per lo spettacolo una vera e propria tournée in tre città pachistane. Il documentario segue entrambe, mostrando le difficoltà di Fawzia a rappresentare il suo spettacolo in Pakistan, e le azioni di Sabeen come attivista dei diritti umani. Il regime militare, la religione costrittiva, le tradizioni soffocanti non possono fermarle. Questo il messaggio di resistenza che rimane anche dopo la tragica fine di Sabeen. Prima italiana.

Pakistani-American actress and writer Fawzia Mirza performs her feminist and lesbian show, “Me, My Mom and Sharmila” in Karachi, where she meets the Pakistani activist Sabeen Mahmud. Fawzia’s monologue speaks about her personal experience and deals in a frank and ironic way with issues such as homosexuality and the relationship between mother and daughter. A true friendship is born between Fawzia and Sabeen, who organizes a tournée for the show in three Pakistani cities. The documentary follows both women, showing Fawzia’s difficulties in representing the show in Pakistan, and Sabeen’s political actions as a human rights activist. The military regime, the constrictions of religion and the suffocating traditions cannot stop them. This is the message of resistance that remains even after Sabeen’s tragic end. Italian première.
