TOUCHING AN ELEPHANT
E se qualcuno ti chiedesse di provare il tuo orientamento sessuale? E se da ciò dipendesse la tua vita? Questa è la prova richiesta a migliaia di persone in Germania dal Ministero Federale per l’Immigrazione e i Rifugiati. È una fortuna se i membri dello staff decidono di credere che i richiedenti asilo siano lesbiche o gay. Nella maggior parte dei casi non lo fanno. Mentre cerca di farsi strada tra le varie istanze, Ritah, una ragazza lesbica ugandese di 20 anni, si confronta con l’assurdità di un sistema che chiede alle persone di provare il loro orientamento sessuale per ottenere protezione. Ritah riconosce nel racconto della tradizione sufi “I sei ciechi e l’elefante” una metafora della propria situazione.

What if someone would ask you to proof your sexual orientation? What if your life would depend on the evidence? Ten thousands of people are asked for this proof by the German Federal Ministry for Migration and Refugees. It is luck if the members of staff decide that they believe someone to be gay. Mostly they don’t. Ritah, a 20 year old lesbian woman from Uganda, while trying to make her way through the instances is confronted with the absurdity of a system that asks people to proof their identity in order to grant them protection and a refugee status. In the parable of the blind men and the elephant she finds a metaphor for her state of mind.
