rivolge il proprio apprezzamento per l’ottima selezione di Immaginaria 2023 premiando all’unanimità Blue Jean di Georgia Oakley e dando una menzione speciale a Les meilleures di Marion Desseigne-Ravel per le seguenti ragioni.

appreciates the excellent selection of Immaginaria 2023 unanimously awarding Blue Jean by Georgia Oakley and giving a special mention to Les meilleures by Marion Desseigne-Ravel for the following reasons.
Motivazione
BLUE JEAN, Georgia Oakley, UK 2022, 97’
Opera prima della regista Georgia Oakley, Blue Jean restituisce con efficacia il clima di oppressione sociale e omofobia sistemica dell’Inghilterra thatcheriana. Ottima prova attoriale della protagonista Rosy McEwen e bella rappresentazione plurale delle diversità di genere, orientamento, non conformità dei corpi, età, etnia. Il film ha un buon ritmo e un montaggio efficace che ben trasmette la difficile conciliazione tra vita privata e pubblica di un’insegnante lesbica. Almeno fino al liberatorio coming out, che sempre sia lodato.
First work by Georgia Oakley, Blue Jean effectively portrays the climate of social oppression and systemic homophobia in Thatcher’s England. Excellent the performance of the protagonist Rosy McEwen and beautiful the plural representation of gender diversity, orientation, non-conformity of bodies, age, ethnicity. The film has a good pace and an effective editing that well conveys the difficult reconciliation between private and public life of a lesbian teacher. At least until the liberating coming out, which is always to be praised.

LES MEILLEURES, Marion Desseigne-Ravel, Francia 2021, 80’
La regista Marion Desseigne-Ravel ne Les meilleures, suo esordio alla regia, racconta con sensibilità i turbamenti interiori del desiderio lesbico di due ragazze sullo sfondo di un ambiente giovanile fortemente codificato da precise regole di comportamento. Uno sguardo mai voyeuristico e una rappresentazione della banlieue parigina non stigmatizzata sono i punti di forza del film che bene mette a fuoco quella messinscena folle e caotica che è l’adolescenza.
The director Marion Desseigne-Ravel in Les meilleures, her directorial debut, sensitively recounts the inner turmoil of lesbian desire in two girls, against the background of a youth environment strongly codified by precise rules of behavior. A look that is never voyeuristic and a representation of the Parisian banlieue that is not stigmatized are the strengths of a film which brings into focus the crazy and chaotic staging that is adolescence.

LOVE, BARBARA, Brydie O’Connor, USA 2022, 15’
Motivazione
Non era un compito semplice scegliere tra una selezione di documentari per vari aspetti tutti estremamente interessanti, e per questo motivo il nostro ringraziamento va prima di tutto a Immaginaria International film festival.
All’unanimità la giuria documentari ha deciso di assegnare il premio di miglior documentario 2023 a Love Barbara, regia di Brydie O’ Connor, con le seguenti motivazioni.
Nel suo documentario, Brydie O’Connor riesce a restituire, pur nella brevità del racconto, tutta la complessità del rapporto trentennale tra due donne straordinarie, Florrie Burke, avvocata internazionale per i diritti civili, e Barbara Hammer, indimenticabile regista di film sperimentali sull’esperienza e la sessualità lesbica, entrati nella storia del cinema.
Guardando le immagini, dopo la morte di Hammer, è come se fossimo sedute al suo tavolo di lavoro per scoprire assieme alla compagna gli appunti, le foto, la corrispondenza e i disegni che lei ha lasciato. Gestire un’eredità intellettuale è un viaggio affascinante ma anche un lavoro di rimemorazione dolorosa: Burke vi si avventura come ulteriore possibilità di continuare la relazione con l’amore della sua vita accettando un dialogo oltre la morte che, grazie alla regista, coinvolge anche noi.
It was not an easy task to choose from the documentaries that were all extremely interesting in various respects, and for this reason our thanks go first of all to Immaginaria International Film Festival.
The jury unanimously decided to award the 2023 best documentary to Love Barbara, directed by Brydie O’ Connor, for the following reasons.
In her documentary, Brydie O’Connor manages to convey, despite the shortness of the story, all the complexity of the thirty-year relationship between two extraordinary women, Florrie Burke, an international civil rights lawyer, and Barbara Hammer, an unforgettable director of experimental films on the experience and lesbian sexuality, which entered in the history of cinema.
Looking at the images, after Hammer’s death, it is as if we were sitting at her working table, discovering together with his partner the notes, photos, correspondence and drawings that she left behind. Managing an intellectual legacy is a fascinating journey but also a painful recollection: Burke ventures into it as a further possibility to continue the relationship with the love of her life by accepting a dialogue beyond death which, thanks to the director, involves also the viewers.

TEDDY, Milda Baginskaité, UK 2020, 13’
Motivazione
La giuria dei cortometraggi assegna il premio per il miglior cortometraggio 2023 a Teddy di Milda Baginskaité per la vastità delle tematiche affrontate, quali l’immigrazione, l’accettazione di sé, la scoperta della propria identità , il bullismo. Il tutto condensato in un piccolo gioiellino di 13 minuti che ci insegna a non chiedere il permesso per essere se stessi e a rispondere alla violenza ballando. Una piccola e potente rivoluzione gentile quotidiana.
The jury for best short film 2023 awards the prize to Teddy by Milda Baginskaité for the vastness of the issues addressed, such as immigration, self-acceptance, the discovery of one’s identity, bullying. All condensed into a little 13-minute gem that teaches us not to ask permission to be ourselves and to respond to violence by dancing. A small and powerful gentle daily revolution.

SUMMERLAND, Jessica Swale, UK 2020, 99’
Motivazione
La musica di Summerland di Jessica Swale esalta i contenuti del tessuto narrativo in cui intimità, empatia e nostalgia si distribuiscono su tre dimensioni temporali.
La parte orchestrale è realizzata con archi e pianoforte e l’originalità della scelta timbrica dell’arpa diventa l’ elemento fondamentale nei passaggi tra i flashback narrativi ed emotivi del vissuto di Alice.
The music of Jessica Swale‘s Summerland enhances the contents of the narrative fabric in which intimacy, empathy and nostalgia are distributed over three temporal dimensions.
The orchestral part is made with strings and piano and the originality of the timbral choice of the harp becomes the fundamental element in the passages between the narrative and emotional flashbacks of Alice’s experience.

La musica di The Novice di Lauren Hadaway coglie perfettamente l’anima nevrotica e ossessiva del film attraverso l’ottima scelta del compositore di alternare momenti di scrittura orchestrale a canzoni del repertorio pop, che contribuisce ad esaltare la tensione emotiva.
The music of The Novice by Lauren Hadaway perfectly captures the film’s neurotic and obsessive nature through the excellent choice of the composer to alternate moments of orchestral writing with songs from the pop repertoire, a choice which helps to enhance the emotional tension.
