Un viaggio approfondito nella storia della narrativa lesbica dagli anni Venti agli anni Novanta, a partire dai primi romanzi, The Well of Loneliness di Radclyffe Hall e Orlando di Virginia Wolf, fino alle opere più recenti di Sarah Waters. La voce principale che ci conduce attraverso questo viaggio letterario è quella di Lilian Faderman, americana, autrice di numerosi volumi su storia e letteratura lesbica. A lei si alternano le voci delle autrici che raccontano le loro esperienze, le difficoltà nella scrittura e nella pubblicazione delle loro opere. Il documentario esplora anche l’impatto che questi romanzi hanno avuto sulla società in generale, ad esempio sul cinema, come è accaduto con Desert Hearts di Jane Rule, che ha avuto quasi una seconda vita e un grandissimo successo grazie al film di Donna Deitch.

In Her Words: 20th Century Lesbian Fiction is a feature documentary examining the history of lesbian fiction from the 1920s through the 1990s, starting from early novels, such as Radclyffe Hall’s The Well of Loneliness and Virginia Wolf’s Orlando, to Sarah Waters’ more recent works. The main voice is that of Lilian Faderman, American lesbian historian, author of several volumes on lesbian history and literature. Her voice mixes with the voices of several writers who tell their experiences. The film explores how key authors and their works had significant impact on the genre and society at large, also in cinema, as happened with Jane Rule’s Desert Hearts, which almost had a second life and a huge success thanks to Donna Deitch’s film.
