LA FRACTURE

Parigi 2018, sabato sera. Raf e Julie, una coppia borghese sull’orlo della rottura dopo una relazione di dieci anni, si ritrovano a trascorrere la notte in un pronto soccorso perché Raf, in seguito a una brutta caduta, si è fratturata un gomito. Fuori è in corso una protesta dei gilet gialli, che arrivano ad assediare l’ospedale, mentre all’interno il personale sanitario è insufficiente e costretto a turni massacranti. Al pronto soccorso arriva anche un camionista rimasto ferito insieme ad altri manifestanti negli scontri con la polizia. Yann è molto agitato e non vuole restare in ospedale perché teme di perdere il lavoro non consegnando la merce in tempo. Dal pronto soccorso, luogo in cui si intrecciano piccole e grandi storie, si esce solo alla fine del film. La “frattura” non è solo quella del gomito di Raf, ma anche quella di una Francia lacerata dal conflitto sociale, rappresentato dai due personaggi principali, Raf la disegnatrice e Yann il camionista, la borghesia di sinistra da un lato e la rivolta populista e proletaria dall’altro. Una frattura che sembra ricomporsi, almeno sul piano umano, durante le lunghe ore di permanenza al pronto soccorso, perché l’incontro aiuta a superare pregiudizi e differenze.
It is a Saturday evening at the end of 2018 in Paris. Raf and Julie, a middle-class couple on the verge of breakup after ten years together, are spending their night in an emergency room, since Raf fractured her elbow in a trivial accident. It is also the evening of a “yellow vests”’s protest. They arrive to besiege the building, while the medical staff is reduced to the bone and struggling with grueling shifts. The truck driver Yann, one of the demonstrators, also gets into the hospital, injured by the police and angry. Until the end of the film, we do not leave the emergency room, a place where small stories and great tragedies overlap.
The “fracture” is not only the one of Raf’s elbow, but represents also social conflict in France, embodied in the characters of Raf and Yann, the intellectual and left-wing bourgeoisie on the one hand and the popular, populist and proletarian rebellion on the other. A fracture that seems to heal during those long hours in the emergency room, since the encounter helps to overcome the respective prejudices and differences.
