LOVING HIGHSMITH
Basato sugli scritti personali di Patricia Highsmith e sui racconti della famiglia e delle amanti, il documentario getta nuova luce sulla vita della famosa scrittrice e ne ricostruisce il versante più nascosto, il suo amore per le donne. Highsmith è stata costretta a nascondere la propria identità alla sua famiglia texana e all’opinione pubblica. Ma il romanzo The Price of Salt, uscito nel 1952 e firmato con uno pseudonimo, segna un traguardo importante nella storia della letteratura lesbica: per la prima volta un rapporto d’amore fra donne non finisce con la morte o la separazione. Della sua intensa e movimentata vita sentimentale Patricia Highsmith scrive soltanto nei suoi diari, che sono stati ritrovati dopo la sua morte in un armadio per la biancheria nella casa in Ticino dove la scrittrice ha trascorso gli ultimi anni della sua vita.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s personal writings and accounts of her family and lovers, the film casts new light on the famous writer’s life and reconstructs its most hidden side, her love for women. Highsmith was forced to hide her sexual identity from her Texan family and from the public opinion. However, the novel The Price of Salt, released in 1952 and signed with a pseudonym, marks an important milestone in the history of lesbian literature: for the first time a love relationship between women does not end with death or separation. Patricia Highsmith only writes about her intense and eventful love life in her diaries, which were found after her death in a linen closet in the house in Ticino where the writer spent the last years of her life.
