SINOSSI
Le sorelle Lucy e Martha Morrow partecipano regolarmente alle dimostrazioni per l’abolizione della pena di morte, seguendo le esecuzioni capitali in tutto il Midwest. A uno di questi raduni Lucy incontra Mercy, che è fra i sostenitori dell’esecuzione essendo figlia di un poliziotto il cui collega è stato ucciso dall’uomo che sta per essere giustiziato. Lucy le rivela la ragione per cui è coinvolta nella causa abolizionista: suo padre è stato condannato per omicidio e attende l’esecuzione nel braccio della morte. Le due ragazze dovrebbero essere acerrime nemiche, e invece provano attrazione l’una per l’altra. La loro relazione si trasforma, passando dall’ostilità alla curiosità, fino a diventare un’intensa passione. Sisters Lucy (Ellen Page) and Martha Morrow (Amy Seimetz) are regular attendees at state executions across the Midwest, where they demonstrate in favour of abolishing the death penalty. At one such event, Lucy spots Mercy (Kate Mara), daughter of a police officer whose partner was killed by a man about to receive a lethal injection. Mercy is there with father and mother to celebrate justice served. Lucy and Mercy could be bitter enemies, yet they share an undeniable connection. Their relationship grows from hostility to curiosity to intense, physical passion. In the beginning of the story, there’s not an evident reason why Lucy and her sister Martha are so involved in this struggle against death penalty, their choice just looks like a political one. But eventually Lucy must confess her reasons for getting involved in the cause: her own father (Elias Koteas) was convicted for his wife murder, and now waits on death row. Can Lucy and Mercy overcome their intense differences, or will these differences consume them?
