SUMMERLAND
Alice Lamb, una ricercatrice di mitologia e di folklore, fieramente indipendente, fin da prima della seconda guerra mondiale vive nel suo studio in cima a una scogliera nel Kent, e scrive libri scientifici per sfatare i miti e smentire l’esistenza di forze ultraterrene. Totalmente assorbita dal suo lavoro, Alice tollera a stento i dispetti e gli scherzi dei ragazzini locali. Le viene chiesto di accogliere Frank, un ragazzo che è stato mandato nel Kent perché a Londra non era al sicuro. Alice, che teme che la presenza di un ragazzino possa interferire con il suo lavoro di ricerca, non ha alcuna intenzione di tenerlo con sé. Dopo avere inizialmente deciso di sbarazzarsi di lui, accetta di ospitarlo per una settimana. Alice è tormentata dai ricordi di una storia d’amore che ha vissuto quando studiava all’università: si era innamorata di Vera, un’aspirante scrittrice, che le aveva spezzato il cuore quando aveva interrotto la relazione non perché fosse proibita, ma perché aveva un forte desiderio di maternità. Con il passare dei giorni si instaura un legame tra Alice e Frank: lei gli racconta del “Summerland”, la visione pagana dell’aldilà, e lui manifesta interesse per le sue ricerche. Alla fine della settimana insieme, Alice decide di tenere Frank con sé.
Alice Lamb, a fiercely independent researcher of mythology and folklore, has lived in her cliff-top studio in Kent since before the start of World War II, writing scientific books to debunk myths and disprove the existence of otherworldly forces. Totally absorbed in her work, Alice hardly tolerates the teasing and pranks of the local kids. She is asked to take in Frank, a boy who has been sent to Kent because he was not safe in London. Alice, who fears that the presence of a little boy could interfere with her research work, has no intention of hosting him. After initially deciding to get rid of him, she agrees to host him for a week. Alice is haunted by memories of a love story she experienced as a student at university: she fell in love with Vera, an aspiring writer, who broke her heart when she decided to end their relationship not because it was considered taboo, but because she had a strong desire for motherhood. As the days go by, a bond develops between Alice and Frank: she tells him about the “Summerland”, the pagan idea of the afterlife, and he expresses interest in her research. At the end of their week together, Alice decides to keep Frank with her.
