Nel 1992 Pat Thomson, una colonnella pluridecorata. viene chiamata a presiedere una commissione di indagine su Margarethe Cammermeyer. Ritenuta idonea per un avanzamento di carriera nel 1989, la colonnella Margarethe, madre di tre figli, infermiera integerrima, ha rivelato di essere lesbica. Non soltanto le viene negata la promozione annunciata, ma le viene chiesto anche di lasciare l’esercito. Quello che nessuno sapeva all’epoca era che anche Pat Thomson era lesbica e che viveva con la sua compagna, Barbara Brass. Pat ha dovuto affrontare un’immane sofferenza, prima di essere costretta a espellere Margarethe dall’esercito. Alcuni decenni dopo, la verità viene svelata in tutta la sua complessità e le tre donne, Pat, Barbara e Margarethe, si trovano di nuovo insieme per ripercorrere quegli eventi e l’impatto che hanno avuto sul cambiamento della politica militare nei confronti dell’omosessualità, ovvero la definitiva abrogazione della famigerata politica del “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Dalla storia di Margarethe nel 1995 è stato tratto un film televisivo, Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story [“Costretta al silenzio”], con Glenn Close come protagonista e Barbra Streisand come executive producer.

In 1992, a highly-decorated female colonel, Pat Thomson, was forced to expel an Army hero, Margarethe Cammermeyer. Subject to evaluation for career advancement, Margarethe, a mother of three and an upstanding nurse, revealed that she was a lesbian. She was denied promotion and asked to leave the army. What no one knew at the time was that the same colonel Pat Thomson was herself a closeted lesbian who secretly lived with her partner, Barbara Brass. Presiding over this case forced Pat to confront her own moral dilemma and her own secret before deciding to expel Margarethe from the army. Decades later, this truth is exposed in all of its complexity, and the three women involved come together again to contemplate those events and their impact on the military policy on homosexuality. In 1995 a film was made from the story of Margarethe, Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story, with Glenn Close as protagonist and Barbra Streisand as executive producer.
