THE CHAMBERMAID (SLÚŽKA)
La disgregazione dell’Impero austro-ungarico e la prima guerra mondiale sono alle porte, quando la quindicenne Anka viene spedita a Praga per fare la domestica in una ricca famiglia viennese. Giovane e inesperta, Anka cerca di destreggiarsi in quel mondo dell’alta borghesia dove i comportamenti di facciata nascondono segreti ben noti alla servitù. La disuguaglianza fra i sessi, diffusa sia tra i lavoratori che nelle classi agiate, costringe le donne ad adottare strategie di sopravvivenza e perfino a diventare nemiche. È ciò che accade fra Anka e Resi, la padroncina di casa, nata e cresciuta per essere solo un ornamento. Sulle prime Resi si mostra dispotica, per vedere fino a che punto la serva possa spingersi pur di eseguire i suoi ordini; ma presto Anka capisce che Resi sta solo sfogando la propria frustrazione su una persona ancora più debole di lei. Da qui a diventare confidenti e complici, il passo è breve. Anka e Resi, nate agli estremi della scala sociale, trovano l’una nell’altra una speranza e forse una via d’uscita.
The breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the First World War are upon us, when fifteen-year-old Anka is sent to Prague to be a maid for a rich Viennese family. Young and inexperienced, she tries to navigate that world of the upper middle class where superficial behavior hides secrets well known to the servants. Inequality between the sexes, widespread both among workers and in the wealthy classes, forces women to adopt survival strategies and to become enemies. This is what happens between Anka and Resi, the owner of the house, born and raised to be just an ornament. At first Resi appears despotic, to see how far the servant can go to carry out her orders; but Anka soon realizes that Resi is just venting her frustration on someone even weaker than her. From here it is a short step to becoming confidants and accomplices. Anka and Resi, born at the extremes of the social scale, find in each other hope and perhaps a way out.
