Stanche di molestie e discriminazioni abitative, le lesbiche di Kansas City negli anni Novanta sognavano un posto dove potere “camminare mano nella mano, liberamente per le strade”. Così hanno creato “Womontown”, un’enclave radicale che comprendeva dodici isolati e attirava donne da tutti gli Stati Uniti. Queste donne condividevano il sogno di creare una comunità autosufficiente gestita da donne lesbiche. Esistevano altre comunità lesbiche nelle zone rurali, ma non in città. Così hanno acquistato case a basso prezzo a Kansas City, ed hanno finalmente trasformato il loro sogno in realtà.
Fed up with harassment and housing discrimination, lesbians in 1990s Kansas City dreamed of a place where they could “walk hand in hand, freely down the streets”. So they created “Womontown”. The radical enclave encompassed twelve city blocks and attracted women from all over the U.S. These women shared a dream of creating a self-sufficient community run by and for LGBTQ women. Other lesbian communities existed in rural areas, but not in a city. So they bought low-priced houses in Kansas City and eventually made their dream a reality.
